Match report: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS vs Lenham Wanderers FC U9

Match 1: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS 3-1 Lenham Wanderers FC U9

The last game of the season and the COLTS were looking to capitalise on a surprising result in which Roseacre Raiders beat the current leaders Sittingbourne Athletic.  Their win meant that they finished 7th in the Maidstone Invicta Primary League instead of bottom place 8th.  Importantly that win gave the COLTS the opportunity to take the division 5 title.  But first they had to ‘do the business’ against a travelling Lenham team.  Stonehouse Field conditions were superb; bright, sunny with a slight chill in the air to keep players cool.  The game started well for the COLTS who immediately passed the ball and attacked with purpose.  Using both wings the COLTS were moving forward effortlessly.  It was a matter of time before the deadlock was broken.  The first goal came from an exciting BL run in the right-hand channel.  With the keeper to beat and support in the middle from KT the ‘nippy’ striker was confident enough the blast the ball into the net.  With JM playing ‘out of his skin’ the COLTS controlled the midfield.  BL got his second of the game benefiting from some cool defending by OC who was finding little difficulty linking up with JV wide on the left to threaten the Lenham goal. Two–nil at half time.  The second half did not start the way in which the COLTS fans would have liked.  Lenham through numerous substitutions exploded into action!  Taking a leaf out of the COLTS book they passed the ball well enjoying space down the COLTS right.  But NC was on form and made several saves from both long and short distances.  A rare lapse in concentration from the COLTS midfield allowed Lenham a shooting opportunity which they took and scored.  But this did not deter BL who was having an extraordinary game.  His chasing down of loose balls, harrying Lenham defenders and link up play with JB and ToD, he was rewarded with his hat-trick.

Match 2: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS 3-1 Lenham Wanderers FC U9

The COLTS now had the title in their sights.  With just one point required they set about the second match with the same amount of passion as the first.  With the warnings heeded in the way that Lenham responded in the first match the COLTS confidence was high.  Again KT and the outstanding JM dominated the middle of the park.  They got the ball back when needed, halted Lenham going through the middle and fed BL up-front.  But with Lenham fighting back it took a wonder goal from ToD to break the deadlock.  With the coaches pleading with the tricky winger to ‘look up and pass’ the COLTS’ Messi dribbled from midway in his own half, beating three Lenham defenders before slotting the ball home from an impossible angle beating the ‘keeper at his near post.  With the score at one–nil at the break had the COLTS started to relax too early?  This became worrying for COLTS fans who saw Lenham up their game.  The yellows found space wide and played with more determination forcing the COLTS backwards.  But a COLTS counter-attack saw BL race clear in the left channel and again from an oblique angle beat the Lenham ‘keeper to his near post.  A mirror image of ToDs finish - it was a case of, “anything you can do….”  The game settled and the outcome was becoming clearer but to Lenham’s credit they continued to push.  A thrust through the middle caught JH unaware allowing Lenham to score.  But to his credit JH picked himself up and started to get back into the game intercepting and delivering two neat passes to ToD and JB respectively.  The COLTS saw their dominance rewarded with a third, scored again by BL who took his ‘goals in all competitions’ tally to 23 for the season and create a new club record of scoring the most goals in a single match (5).

There was tension in the air as COLTS fans, knowing what was at stake, were hoping that the lads could finally pull off a league triumph in their first competitive season.  Although the game was rather one-sided the COLTS showed that they have what it takes to win a league on the last game of the season ~ a tremendous display of concentration.  Jose Mourinho would probably have said that the season had gone exactly to plan, but the COLTS coaches know that results towards the end of the season had been kind.  Football pundits will always say that luck 'evens itself out over the season' and in hindsight the COLTS could have had more points going into this game than they actually had.  In summary, the COLTS delivered a truly magnificent season-long effort both during matches and in training which saw all players improve month upon month.  With a strong team bond, good football being played and lots of fun had the COLTS go into the summer tournaments confident.  The ‘Green Army’ marches on!!

Match report: Maidstone Utd Royals FC U9 vs Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Match 1: Maidstone Utd Royals FC U9 0-1 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Into the home straight of the season and the COLTS are still in with a shout for the Maidstone Invicta Primary League Division 5 championship.  With two players out for this game it looked at one stage that the COLTS were to forfeit the match due to a lack of players.  With less than 15 minutes to the kick-off the COLTS could only field five.  Through agreement with the Royals management, coaching staff as well as the referee the kick-off was delayed by ten minutes to allow lost parents to find the Bower Grove School. When they did they found perfect football conditions; bright and cool.  The pitch itself had shown some signs of heavy use in the recent past.  As the game kicked-off the COLTS showed early dominance.  Long spells of the game were in the Royals half with them infrequently breaking out to threaten the COLTS goal.  With 14 shots at the Royals goal it was unbelievable that at half time the score was still nil-nil.  The second half took much the same pattern as the first.  Royals certainly won a little more of the ball but the COLTS strength in depth shone through.  As the game clock neared ten minutes the COLTS started to throw more players forward.  The Royals defence creeked a little, but it didn't crack.  Standing up to BL and JB attempts there was little opportunitiy to score.  The Royals defenders did their job and the goalkeeper did his in what was turning out to be a scene from the Alamo!  Eventually, the only and winning goal came.  But instead from a close range forward play it was a shot from distance.  KTs shot sizzled through the crisp morning air, nestling neatly into the top left-hand corner of the Royals goal.

Match 2: Maidstone Utd Royals FC U9 0-3 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

The second game proved to be much of the same.  Significant COLTS dominance punctuated by Royals breaks from the back.  Indeed JV and OC stood extremely firm in defence not giving anything away.  Their confidence allowed the midfield to settle and play it's football.  JM proved to be a very useful holding player allowing KT more time and space on the ball.  Indeed JMs performance was remarkable today both without and with the ball - we even saw two shots form the midfielder!  But as the COLTS defences stood firm this second game was to show how well they can play going forward.  Two more goals from KT, one of which was created for him by the very industrious JM, the second again from long range. Running on to an inch perfect cross from BL, ToD hit the winner by chipping the Royals 'keeper!

It took some time for the COLTS to get going today, but when they did they looked awesome!  Congratulations go to ThD who stood in for 'keeper NC.  ThD only had two shots to save today but did them perfectly.  The first came from a break where ThD needed to be brave, beating the ball away to his right.  The second came from a long range effort requiring concentration and timing as the ball dipped just in front of him, well done ThD!  No game for the COLTS next week.  In fact the last game of the season is due to be played on the last day of the month.

Match report: Sittingbourne Athletic FC U9 vs Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Match 1: Sittingbourne Athletic FC U9 0-0 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

The COLTS returned after their cup exit to league action knowing that a positive result against league leaders Athletic was needed.  Indeed, as Athletic are the only league team to have beaten the COLTS good preparation was essential for today's game.  Although there was a chill in the air the facilities and pitch condition at the UK Paper sports fields was the best that the COLTS had played on this season.  As the game kicked-off all players played as though the only way to keep warm would be to start at a high pace.  Both teams shared the possession and a few shots at goal were made, but with good marking and tackling the forward lines couldn't create any clear scoring opportunities. The only first half highlight came from a KT free-kick that missed the upright/crossbar by less than the width of a ball.  In the second half the COLTS changed formation to bolster the midfield and win more possession.  This seamed to work a treat as BL started to get more chances.  Athletic showed why they are the league leaders, firstly, by riding their luck at the back, then secondly, by not giving up.  Their determination produced some chances but with JV starting to show some real class and have his best game of the season the Athletic attacks were broken up before they got to shoot at NCs goal. Stalemate in the first game!

Match 2:  Sittingbourne Athletic FC U9 0-2 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

The new formation was working a treat!  With JH and JM trying new positions they performed robustly allowing KT, OC and ToD a little more space.  As BL worked to win the ball back he found that the Athletic defence gave him more space to operate.  This combined pressure gave the COLTS the upper hand but it was less than convincing as Athletic refused to give in.  Eventually pressure down the COLTS left saw the ball fall nicely to KT to drive the ball home in the bottom right-hand corner from 6 yards.  Not the prettiest goal KT had scored this year but certainly an important one.  More COLTS attacks continued but Athletic lasted until the break to re-group.  The second half saw OC move from defence into the midfield and JV return to defence.  As Athletic pushed and pushed to get the equaliser they found the COLTS midfield difficult to breach.  On the odd time that they did get behind the midfield they found JV to be a rock.  This frustrated Athletic and their passes began to grow longer and less controlled allowing JV to win even more ball and pick his passes through midfield.  Athletic frustration was starting to tell at the back as well.  ToD and BL harried relentlessly for the ball.  From one such adventure the ball fell at BLs feet.  Turning sharply the 'nippy' forward delivered a purposeful cross to OC advancing into the right side of the Athletic penalty area.  One touch to control then bang! His shot flew passed the Athletic 'keeper into the net!  As the game pushed on there were a few chances for both teams and either could have / should have scored.

The coaches would be pleased that the COLTS were able to shut-out the vibrant Athletic attack.  This is no mean feat as Athletic have scored against all teams in the Maidstone Invicta Primary League Division 5 this year.  COLTS fans may have felt more relieved if their team picked up all six points - but they have to settle for four.  It does mean that with two games (four matches) left for both Athletic and the COLTS the run in to the end of the season should be very exciting!!

Match report: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS vs Vinters Rangers FC U9

Borough Green FC U9 COLTS 1-2 Vinters Rangers FC U9

Recent snow at the beginning of February had meant postponements in the COLTS schedule.  Following the thaw the sudden warm spell in the weather meant that conditions at Stonehouse Field were perfect for football - they had to be.  The COLTS playing their first competitive season in the Maidstone Invicta League Fifth Division had reached the quarter final of the Joshua Goodwin Memorial Cup and faced First Division side Vinters Rangers.  With a couple of players out due to injury and illness the COLTS took to the field knowing that today's match was going to be hard.  Rangers won the toss and elected to kick-off.  Straight away the technical quality of the first division side showed through.  Neat interplay bewteen the midfield and very convincing ball control saw Rangers dominate the first few minutes.  But if there is one thing that the COLTS have improved on this season it's dealing with pressure.  With the defence holding firm and midfield working tirelessly against a four man Rangers midfield the COLTS started to get into the game.  However most of the possession and territorial advantage was not enough and the COLTS couldn't muster any threat on the Rangers goal.  No score at the first turnaround but the game was full of excitement.  As the second period started some very skillful passing was seen by both teams.  The tackling was very solid as well.  As some COLTS players were feeling what it was like to play against top quality opponents they kept their concentration and got on with their game.  The Rangers sweeper was called into action to clear up threats from the COLTS through the centre and from both wings and was a stand-out player for them.  His strength, speed and ability to thwart shooting opportunities would be the telling factor in this game. The 'extra' midfield player rarely gave the COLTS midfield worries.  But from a Rangers throw-in on the COLTS right a rare mis-control from a Rangers player saw the ball ricochet off a COLTS defender setting up a shooting chance that allowed Rangers to break the deadlock. One-nil to Rangers at half-time and after so much hard work it was going to be interesting to see how the COLTS could react to going in behind.

The second half saw the COLTS playing up the SHF slope. As Rangers attacked with meaning the COLTS defence shook a couple of times but then recovered. Half way through the third period ToD was brought down midway in the Rangers half.  This set up a KT free kick that flew into the top-right corner of the Rangers goal levelling the score. Not only had the COLTS got back into the game they were now flying.  Lots of ball winning in the midfield put Rangers off their passing game.  But still very few mistakes were made by either team. Going into the last period the high quality of football continued.  No spectator could say that all players hadn't given 110% and indeed no player looked like tiring.  Crisp passing from Rangers saw an opportunity arise on the COLTS right but the COLTS defence recovered.  Spotting KT free in the middle of the park JV set the COLTS midfielder free.  Speeding into the Rangers half KT and BL presented a 2 vs 1 with the Rangers 'keeper.  Practically the only time that Rangers were exposed but alas the COLTS were unable to make their opponent pay. Going into the last 5 minutes and the standard of play still high.  Rangers came close with a shot that was tipped onto the crossbar by NC. Rangers won two corners in succession from which the second ensued a goal-mouth scramble involving ten players and the goalkeeper.  COLTS defenders blocked four or five shots before the ball bounced kindly for a Rangers striker to tuck the ball in. Game over? Not at all.  Rangers attacked again but COLTS defending rebuffed the challenge leading to a counter-attack that put presuure on the Rangers goal.  A last minute free-kick, well within KTs range was given.  As the COLTS midfielder struck the ball it looked as though it was going to be a repeat of his first half strike.  But getting a little too much of the ball saw it brush the crossbar and fall harmlessly for a goal kick.

A fine, fine performance from the COLTS who made a great account of themselves and have won the right to hold their heads up high.  Rangers were clearly a more gifted technical side but the COLTS determination, speed and skill certainly made Rangers work for their win. The game could have gone either way; it is fair to say that both teams deserved to score and the winner didn't deserve to win by more than one goal - a fair result in the end then.  The one thing COLTS can take from this game is that regardless of the difference in league position, they now know what it takes to play against superior opposition.  Although disappointed, all COLTS players showed great sportsmanship by wishing Rangers all the best for the semi.

Match report: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS vs Larkfield Juniors FC U9

Match 1: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS 3-0 Larkfield Juniors FC U9

The COLTS welcomed Larkfield Juniors to Stonehouse Field where a mild start to the morning (temperature of about 8 C) progressively worsened to near freezing by the end of both matches.  The ground was sticky but at least there was no wind.  A brisk start by COLTS saw them return to their passing game that had only been on show in parts of the matches since Christmas.  With KT feeding both JV and ToD, early COLTS dominance was proving to be difficult for Larkfield to contain.  Indeed this first half of match 1 gave COLTS fans plenty to cheer about as chance after chance came while Larkfield were pinned in their own half for the entire 12.5 minutes. When called upon JH and ThD made their challenges and got the ball into the attacking third. Two BL goals were the difference at the turn-around but it could have easily been more as crosses, through-balls and shots rained on the Larkfield goal.  A good first half performance by the Larkfield 'keeper kept the score down.  The second half display from the COLTS was less intense but had equal vigour in attack.  As JB and OC battled, more gaps appeared in the Larkfield defence.  KT finished off the scoring.

Match 2: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS 3-1 Larkfield Juniors FC U9

The second match was becomming affected by the conditions.  As the ambient temperture plummeted the pace of the game slowed but the action didn't!  COLTS started well, again with BL scoring early.  Then with some fine interplay JV released OC in the Larkfield danger zone.  The tricky forward got around his defender only to be brought down in the box ~ penalty!  Skipper ThD chose KT to take the penalty which he despatched comfortably.  Just when it looked like a rout was about to occur Larkfield started to play.  They started to win more of the ball and play out of defence.  JM halted Larkfield pressure twice to start more COLTS attacks but it was clear that Larkfield started to hold some belief.  Then, a counter-attack, bravely halted by NC, was enough to lift the spirits of the travelling Larkfield fans.  Urged on Larkfield played a nice exchange in midfield that released their striker.  Chased by JV and ToD the striker kept cool and slotted home a worthy consoliation.  With the crowd against them, and conceding their first goal in over 100 minutes of game time, the COLTS reacted with astonishing maturity.  With BL winning more ball in the centre, KT was able to pick passes at will.  KT's commanding performance made the difference today and this was enough to spur on the COLTS to find a final goal.  The winner was eventually scored by ToD who has not missed a single game for the COLTS this season and took his personal tally to 12 in all competitions.

Two aspects of the game really counted for the COLTS; (1) their first half performance in the first match was the best football they have played this season and (2) the way that they reacted when conceding the goal.  To see this combination of good traits in a single match shows great team spirit and understanding.

Match report: Larkfield Juniors FC U9 vs Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Larkfield Juniors FC U9 0-4 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Following last week's postponement due to a frozen pitch the COLTS returned to Larkfield to contest the second round of the Joshua Goodwin Memorial Cup.  Double-bookings at the Brookfield School meant the match was relocated to the Larkfield rec.  The pitch had an upward slope to one end and appeared a little wider but shorter compared to the Stonehouse Field pitch.  This may have been an illusion but nevertheless this did play a part in the tactics later in the game.  During the warm-up the wind was blowing quite strongly but it seemed to settle in time for kick-off. Which was convenient as both teams took their time to settle.  Playing downhill the COLTS were unable to gain advantage that the slope offered them.  But with both sides refusing to risk too many players forward the inevitable outcome was a midfield tussle.  Gradually the COLTS started to win more possession but were unable to make it count.  Going forward the best chance came to KT who received the ball from JV on the left and unleashed a fierce drive only to see the Larkfield goalie tip the ball over for a corner ~ great save!  Uncharacteristically, BL was not finding much favour up front as Larkfield battled and defended well.  Indeed both defences played well with NC dominating his penalty area and JM making some timely tackles.  0-0 at half-time and with both teams looking stale up front penalties was looking like the most likely outcome.

The second half saw the COLTS make a tactical change looking to get JB, OC and ToD more of the ball.  As the resilient Larkfield started to tire COLTS found a new gear to shift into.  Gaps between the defence and midfield were closed by JV and ThD, with the latter finding range and timing of his tackling.  Passing out of defence the COLTS gained confidence going forward as OC started to pass fluently.  Numerous intelligent passing from him opened up the Larkfield defences with JB and ToD getting more opportunities to run.  The breakthrough came via some cute inter-play between OC and BL.  A perfectly timed 'knock' into space released BL down the right.  With electric pace the wide man got to the bye-line where his floated cross found ToD who headed bravely past the on-coming 'keeper.  Scoring the first of the match was the trigger to ignite ToD who had been quiet until then.  But the COLTS left it late, very late, to make their mark on the game. Within the last ten minutes another attack down the left ended in a loose ball for KT to drive home from 10 yards.  A rare Larkfield attack followed from which COLTS 'keeper NC was able to send the ball into midfield where a flick-on found ToD free to tap home.  'Messi's' hat-trick was completed with a wonderful piece of individual skill.  After being released in the left channel he put on the 'after-burners,' got passed his defender then checked back to slot the ball passed the Larkfield goalie into the bottom right-hand post ~ cool, very cool finish.  A superb classic hat-trick: one header, one with the left foot and one with the right.  There was enough time at the end to try out some new positions for OR, JM and JH; all of whom battled bravely today.  At one point when JM broke free late in the game it looked like the COLTS would get a fifth but this time the defender cleared.

So the COLTS make it through to the last eight to play Vinters Rangers on 25th February 2012 with home advantage.  They took their time today and started to show the kind of form from last year.  Good individual skill and accomplished execution of tactical changes showed how adaptable each of these young players have become.

Match report: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS vs Vinters Green FC U9

Match 1: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS 1-0 Vinters Green FC U9

The first game after the Christmas break and a resonable start by the COLTS despite being a player down through illness.  The mild weather was a welcomed treat compared to the freezing conditions of the last match.  The COLTS were full of enthusiasm but arguably still full of Christmas pudding!  A learning point for the coaches would be to take a leaf out of Vinters book, who were preparing for the match a good hour before kick-off.  This clearly knocked the cob-webs off their players legs who presented a much better team than the one who played the COLTS  back in November 2011. A dogged first half in which both teams battled bravely.  The only COLTS highlight was a BL finish from 8 yards that has taken his goal tally to 15.  The second half of this match saw the best of the COLTS play.  OC and JB were passing well and KT was causing problems with his corners and crosses.  The pass of the match was delivered by ThD who controlled the loose ball deep in his own half before delivering a 'Hollywood' pass to ToD down the COLTS right.  But for all the build up the COLTS were unable to create scoring opportunities.  As Vinters had their fair share of possession and opportunities the game ended 1-0 much to the releif of the COLTS fans.

Match 2: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS 1-1 Vinters Green FC U9

The second match resembled the first half of the first match rather than the second.  Determined to score goals the COLTS decided to push players forward.  This aggressive strategy did not bode well as the Vinters defence absorbed the pressure confidently.  With reliable goalkeeping Vinters had no difficulty taking the ball from eager COLTS attackers to turn it to their advantage.  Calm Vinters passing out of defence produced several counter-attacks that presented the COLTS defenders with 3 and sometimes 4 Vinters attackers to deal with.  Eventually Vinters found the back of the net with a superb finish to NCs left, tucked into the bottom corner nicely ~ there was nothing the COLTS 'keeper could do about it.  Revitalised it looked as though Vinters would run away with the game.  But a COLTS attack down the right saw OC create a shooting opportunity that beat the Vinters 'keeper at his near-post from an oblique angle.  The second half continued with the same pattern.  The COLTS too eager to score goals committed too many players forward.  Vinters keeping cool again exploited the space behind the COLTS midfield.  Although the COLTS defence played well it was really due to poor Vinters finishing that they didn't kill the game off.  Indeed the scoreline could have easily been seven a'piece. For the COLTS, eagerness turned to desperation as they spent at least half of the second half in the Vinters third of the field.  Last year's COLTS would probably have scored but with too much turkey over Christmas no more goals were scored.

The result was not a disaster as 4 points keeps the COLTS in the running for the title.  But the performance was not up to the usual COLTS high standards.  This was confirmed by comments from some players but, hey: everyone has an off-day sometimes!  The fact that (1) each player tried their hardest, (2) understood that committing players forward is not always the best strategy and (3) that they identified some improvement points shows that this team can think about football as well as grind out results when needed.

Match report: MPE Sports FC U9 vs Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Match 1: MPE Sports FC U9 0-2 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

The last game of the year brought with it similar conditions to last week's match.  At 09:30 the Madgingford Junior School playing field did not look playable with some heavily iced areas linking across very soggy wet and muddy patches.  Both team's coaches decided to wait until kick-off time to make a decision.  Following consultation with the referee both teams waited a further 15 minutes which by that time the pitch had thawed.  This pleased the travelling COLTS fans who turned up in their greatest number of the season so far.  With two absences the smaller than usual squad helped team selections and ensured that players were kept warm with plenty of playing time.  The COLTS started well considering the cold.  No early chances were given to MPE who found the well organised COLTS energised and hard to break down.  Complaints from NC in goal that he hadn't even touched the ball in the first half confirmed this.  Indeed chances were few and far between with the COLTS creating some half chances.  Scoreless at the turn-around the COLTS realigned themselves and pushed for glory.  BL was finding more luck by falling back and picking up the ball deep.  Equally ToD and OC was finding space in the wide areas to exploit.  This pressure forced corners for the COLTS from which a few good chances came.  With KT knocking in some very dangerous corner-kicks the COLTS were frustrated by being unable to score.  A corner this time from the left, taken by OC whipped across the MPE box.  Travelling quickly ToD got the feintest of touched to put the COLTS ahead.  The match was settled by BL who was able to capitalise on many chances he had made for himself today.

Match 2: MPE Sports FC U9 1-4 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

The day is getting colder! With the threat of rain/sleet/snow in the air the COLTS started determined not to make such hard work of the second match.  There were pleasing performances from ThD and JH both taking rare opportunities to play in midfield.  Both lads had half-chances that on another day may have given them their first goals of the season!  Only one-nil up from the first half through OC the second half sprang into action.  With ToD getting his second KT started his account by finishing off an uncharacteristic 'route-one' move to make it three-nil to the COLTS.  But not game over yet:  MPE got their deserved consolation goal through a driving midfield run.  Becomming more streched in midfield and unable to make a telling tackle the COLTS found themselves under pressure in their own penalty area.  Following a blocked shot an MPE striker found himself in front of goal.  With a solid connection his shot could only be tipped by NC onto the underside of the bar and rippled the net!  A slight lift in the MPE sails was soon taken out as KT found space wide right.  Cutting in he let go a powerful drive which the MPE 'keeper could not keep out!

The lasting impression from today's game was that the COLTS are becomming stronger and stronger.  There still is some work needed in passing in the 'final third,' and there were many occasions where a pass to a supporting player would have been the better decision than to shoot.  However, it is becomming clearer and clearer that such lessons are being learnt.  Well done COLTS for a magnificent effort in 2011!!

Match report: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS vs Roseacre Raiders FC U9

Match 1: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS 1-0 Roseacre Raiders FC U9

As the COLTS start the second half of the season a warm welcome was afforded to a Roseacre Raiders team under new management.  The ground conditions were hard following an overnight frost resulting in low temperatures.  A slight delay to the kick-off helped the pitch thaw out a little and through consensus by both team's coaching staff and the referee it was decided that Stonehouse Field was playable.  As the game kicked-off it was clear that the wintery conditions would play their part in this match.  Neither team got off to a good start with much of the first half being a midfield battle.  Roseacre threatened once but found NC too difficult to beat.  At least the COLTS 'keeper got his hands warm! With parts of the pitch firm the ball was rolling at speed and making it difficult for the COLTS to get their trademark passing game going.  Nil-nil at half time.  The second half started a little better with the introduction of KT.  The hard work put in by the midfield and defence was starting to pay off.  Collecting the ball from the tackles made by ThD and JV, KT was able to release ToD down the right.  His cross wasn't cleared and among the chaos KT had made ground up to slot the ball home.  With still 5 minutes remaining Roseacre made life difficult by stubbornly denying space in midfield.  The COLTS did come close again but 1-0 was a fair result and enough warning to the COLTS to up their game.

Match 2: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS 3-0 Roseacre Raiders FC U9

Bouyant from clinching a hard fought victory in the first match the COLTS came our determined to justify themselves.  With the Roseacre team defending well KT, ToD and OC started to pass the ball.  The additional width provided by ToD stretched the Roseacre midfield and defence.  Often with two players to beat ToD demonstrated good decision making by finding KT and others.  The first goal came from a smart finish by OC following a COLTS counter-attack. This one-nil lead at half time convinced the COLTS that despite the difficult conditions, and an opponent that was defending well, passing was only option.  The second COLTS goal again started with fine defending.  By tackling a Roseacre midfielder JH got the ball to JV.  His quick, smart ball found BL half way inside the Roseacre half.  Showing good speed and ball control BL exploited the Roseacre right and delivered an inch perfect cross to JB who simply had a two yard tap in.  It was later revealed that JB had a bet with his dad that he would score today - the coaches have yet to find out what the stakes were!  The third and final goal was scored by BL after showing more determination and speed.  The score may have been four if KTs drive late on in the game was an inch to the left.

A slow start to this game which is probably equally due to the fact that the lads are nearing the end of this school term as well as the cold conditions.  Without the ball the COLTS showed resilience and maturity in getting back to defend.  A stand out performance here was BL who was leading the 'pack' to win the ball back.  More attention is required on changing ball-winning into attack but the COLTS did prove that they can pass.  More importantly they showed today that even against defending teams that are difficult to break down the COLTS showed determination and a collective spirit to create shooting opportunities.

Match report: Larkfield Juniors FC U9 vs Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Match 1: Larkfield Juniors FC U9 0-4 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

It's really starting to feel like winter now as a cold but dry day saw the first of three fixtures between these two sides this season.  The COLTS were one player down through virus but confidence was high following a bright set of results of late.  Larkfield Juniors had the brightest of all starts to this game showing some good ball control and running at pace. They broke the COLTS midfield down early exposing the defence a number of times.  Several corners were again conceded and eventually cleared giving hope that lessons from last week match had been learned.  The COLTS has good spells with the ball and some impressive link up play allowed them to grow in confidence.  But a relentless Larkfield kept knocking on the COLTS door.  The first real opportunity in the game fell to Larkfield.  A superb covering run from midfield followed by a robust, well timed tackle by JM quashed the opportunity that could have easily become a goal.  The COLTS had to dig deep and reassess their play.  With ToD starting to find his range his passes eventually became the telling factor in match 1.  Releasing BL in the right channel the cross found KT on a characteristic run from deep to tap home.  The second COLTS goal came from similar build-up play.  This time the cross rebounded off the Larkfield 'keeper and into the net.  Own goal probably, but we'll give it to BL.  2-0 COLTS at half time.  The second half was again somewhat scrappy.  A nice solid shot from OR slammed against the upright and rebounded nicely to ToD to score a well deserved goal.  The scoring was completed by a stunning goal from OC.  Collecting the Larkfield goal kick on the half-way line his excellent first touch allowed him to size up the opportunity and lob the 'keeper from about 35 yards!

Match 2: Larkfield Juniors FC U9 1-1 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Bouyant from the first match the COLTS started briskly.  Literally in the first minute of the game OC found himself in a one-on-one with the Larkfield 'keeper.  He kept his head and slotted his team into an early lead.  Conceding didn't deter Larkfield; a team that has taken points off of every team in the league and whose league position does not reflect their skill and talent, they came back hard at the COLTS.  Resisting wave after wave of attack the COLTS bearly got any opportunities.  Some nice interplay was seen between JV and KT which did force some corners. 1-0 to the COLTS at the interval.  The second half saw a COLTS team that lost some focus.  All the elements were there but some sloppy passing and poor decision-making thwarted many attacks.  Larkfield continued to pressurise the COLTS and yet again it was from a corner that the COLTS conceded.  As the game clock raced down a driving run by BL looked like the COLTS were going to take top prize but his shot hit the wrong side of the post.

Another good effort from the COLTS who were rewarded with some good goals but also a game that identifies some area for improvement on the training ground.  Overall an interesting match that has given both sides a good look at eachother before they next meet on 14th January 2012 in second round of the Joshua Goodwin Memorial Cup.

Match report: 19th November 2011 - Borough Green FC U9 COLTS  vs  Maidstone Utd Royals FC U9

Match 1: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS  3-1  Maidstone Utd Royals FC U9

A welcomed return to Stonehouse Field, from what looks like a league schedule of away games only, saw the COLTS take on Maidstone Utd Royals who were in the middle of a good run of form. Royals enjoyed second place in the league and were looking to put pressure on Sittingbourne - the current leaders.  Conditions; cold but clear, could be described in horse racing terms as 'good to soft' as the ground certainly took a stud.  As the game started Royals showed early dominance and passed well throughout midfield.  COLTS certainly needed to have their football and thinking caps on as the Royals started to find width.  Unluckliy for them they met a COLTS defence that were about to deliver their best collective performance of the season.  Biding their time to make tackles ThD and JH absorbed much Royals pressure allowing the COLTS midfield to help clear the lines.  Eventually the strong COLTS defence sapped energy from the Royals and gaps began to appear.  Having the chance to go forward the COLTS had an eye for goal.  Passing was not as electric as the previous game but goals from KT and BL saw the COLTS go 2-0 up.  Growing in confidence COLTS then started to move the ball.  Good link up play between KT and JV down the left resulted in a cross for BL.  His shot was blocked allowing JB to strike from the edge of the area into the bottom left corner for his first goal of the season: 3-0 COLTS at half time.  The second half saw more Royals pressure with the COLTS defence still showing dominance in the COLTS third.  When needed NC in goal made several saves from which a swift COLTS counter-attack nearly produced more COLTS goals. One lapse of concentration following a Royals corner proved to be the only COLTS defensive error of the match.  Unable to clear the ball a Royals midfielder found space in the COLTS penalty area and squeezed the ball over the line.  Not a great dissappointment but a minor blemish on what would have been a perfect defensive display.

Match 2: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS  3-0  Maidstone Utd Royals FC U9

The match 1 scoreline, in fairness, was probably complimentary to the COLTS. With still much to play for the second match started vigourously.  Royals came out determined to get points.  But with the COLTS defence still absorbing pressure and the midfield working tirelessly to win the ball, the COLTS started to play better football.  From one such recovery JV and JM released KT on another COLTS counter-attack.  With admirable control and confidence KT broke into space giving him time to size up a 30 yard cross-field pass to ToD who has sprinted the length of the pitch to keep up with play.  With superb composure ToD hit his shot first time, slotting the ball to the Royals 'keeper's right - a spectacular goal, created by KT and finished by the one we call 'Messi.'  The second goal was also a good goal, this time, from a set play.  Yet again KT's passing was impressive.  His free-kick found the head of BL who flicked it this time to the 'Keeper's left: 2-0. The end of the first half saw goalline controversy.  As the Royals fought hard to get back in the game a cross-come-shot found its way towards goal.  The judgement was that the COLTS 'keeper stopped the ball before it had crossed the line so the score remained 2-0 at the break.  Although dissappointed the Royals showed admirable sportsmanship and accepted the referee's decision.   The second half proved a nervous affair for COLTS fans.  Despite the 2-0 lead the Royals showed great determination, passion and energy.  Their efforts were not rewarded as they probably should have.  Stout defending from OR, ThD, JM and JH kept the 'shut-out' whilst another cross-come-shot from COLTS' OC on the right was defelected into the Royal's goal to complete the scoring.

In summary the COLTS took their chances well when offered.  But the performance from the defence and goalkeeper was what made the margin of victory so wide.  This win resultied in a league position swap with the Royals.  COLTS play the Royal's again on the last game of the season in what potentially offers to be another tantilising game.

Match report: 12th November 2011 - Vinters Green FC U9 vs Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Match 1: Vinters Green FC U9 0-3 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Conditions were good for today's match against a Vinters Green team that have been performing well in the Maidstone Invicta Primary League Division 5.  With the COLTS fresh from their cup win last week they had to deal with a cross-sloping pitch which would test the accuracy and weight of their passing game.  Straight from the kick-off Vinters looked like the type of team worthy of their superior league position.  Soon enough, however, the COLTS took hold of the game.  Attacks were initiated from deep in the COLTS half and progressed up field causing Vinters many problems.  The sloping pitch didn't present too many difficulties with COLTS linking up together well.  Working hard down the COLTS right JB and BL found plenty of space.  Wonderful vision being exhibited by OC and ToD down the Vinters right allowed space and freedom for other COLTS players.  The first COLTS goal was scored by OC from a cross come shot which was too hot for the Vinters 'keeper to handle; one-nil at the break.  The second half saw an equal amount of accurate passing where ToD shone.  His efforts were rewarded half way through the half with a spectacular individual goal.  The scoring was completed by BL.

Match 2: Vinters Green FC U9 0-2 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

The second game presented more of a challenge for the COLTS.  Their domination of the first game gave way to some complacency that was further aggrevated by a resilinet Vinters team that 'dug in' and started to create chances of their own.  Vinters were looking like the likely first scorers by forcing corner after corner.  Still, the COLTS defence stood firm albeit conceding further corners.  Eventually the ball was taken clear where OC was able to score his second of the match; again, one-nil to the COLTS at the break!  Even with the scoreline the same as the first match nothing else resembled the performance of the first.  In spells the COLTS passing game got going temporarily with the reintroduction of JV and ToD on the left.  With stout tackling from JM and some wonderful, unselfish passing from BL, an opportunity was given for OC for a one-on-one with the Vinters 'keeper.  As cool as you like the CF/CM took the ball around the keeper and slotted home from close range.  Wheeling away in delight from scoring his first COLTS hat-trick goal he was clearly very pleased with his performance today.  Later OC had two other similar chances, but this time the 'keeper got his range and denied any further goals in the game.

In summary the COLTS have progressed from their defeat two games ago and are looking hungry to close the gaps in the league.

Match report: 5th November 2011 - Holtwood Rangers FC U9 vs Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Holtwood Rangers FC U9 0-6 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Today was the COLTS first involvement in the Joshua Goodwin Memorial Cup following a BYE in the previous preliminary round.  With COLTS players looking to bounce back from the first defeat of the season the conditions at the Ditton Community Centre were fitting many a Guy Fawkes celebration; cold and damp.  COLTS players identified that the ball would be skidding off the surface.  This prompted a small change in tactics which were expertly executed by the team.  Fortunately all playing staff were back from half-term holidays and the full strength COLTS made an immediate impression.  First half goals from ToD, KT and BL saw the COLTS go in at the break with a comfortable lead.  In the second half, a COLTS reorganisation saw the COLTS give away ground in the middle of the park.  Although the Holtwood team tested the defence on many occaision the COLTS stood fast and faced the onslaught.  Surviving wave after wave of Holtwood attack, the COLTS were able to fight back.  The tiring Rangers started to leave gaps as each attack broke down.  With two further COLTS goals scored by JV and OC the more exacting onlooker may have called them own goals.  Nevertheless, any debate was soon put to bed as a rapid break from right midfield gave BL a one-on-one with the Holtwood keeper.  The COLTS man came off to the good as he rattled his second and the COLTS sixth in off the crossbar.  COLTS now look forward to the 2nd Round on 14th January 2012 away to Larkfield Juniors FC U9 at the Brookfield School.

Match report: 22nd October 2011 - Borough Green FC U9 COLTS vs Sittingbourne Athletic FC U9

Match 1: Borough Green FC U9 COLTS 1-2 Sittingbourne Athletic FC U9

Another bright, sunny October day saw Sittingbourne Athletic visit Stonehouse Field.  The visitor's were enjoying a comfortable second place in the Maidstone Invicta U9 division 5 and looking to make headway against an unbeaten COLTS.  However, this was always going to be a difficult game due to many COLTS absences. After captain JM won the toss and elected to kick-off the game started brightly with COLTS enjoying most of the play.  But it didn't take Athletic long before they started to get back into the game.  With the regular COLTS GK absent JB bravely took the gloves and was called into action saving from close range.  The ensueing corners gave the COLTS defence many problems with the visitors coming close a number of times before ThD and JH scrambled the ball away.  The COLTS midfield worked hard and did create a number of chances and half-chances.  Trying his luck from distance KT had a couple of shots saved.  But it was from a break down the left that gave the COLTS a good look at Sittingbourne's 'keeper.  Working well together KT and JV moved effortlessly down the left.  When the pass came in ToD flicked the ball over his and a defenders head and hit the ball hard towards the top right corner.  The whole move was remeniscent of Gazza's goal for England against Scotland in the Euro 1996 finals at Wembley.  The only difference was that the Sittingbourne 'keeper miraculously leaped and managed to tip the ball over for a corner.  It was this fine form from the Athletic number 1 that soon became par for the course over the rest of the match.  Still buzzing from a good effort the COLTS pushed up to get the edge at the break.  But again poor COLTS tackling gave the visitors yet another opportunity which this time they took giving them the lead in a strongly contested first half.  The second half followed much of the same pattern with both teams going close.  But it was superb wing play again down the left that saw ToD and JV combine to equalise and give JV his first goal of the season.  With a draw not looking like a likely outcome both teams pushed for the win.  It was Sittingbourne that capitalised on more defending errors.  COLTS fans would have seen the deficit increase if it wasn't for JV's brace of last minute goal-line clearences.

Match 2:  Borough Green FC U9 COLTS 1-2 Sittingbourne Athletic FC U9

The same scoreline was observed for the second match as the first but this time with an ever increasing amount of end-to-end excitement.  This time it was the COLTS that scored first.  ToD and KT combining through the middle resulted in KT finding the net in a game where he and his midfield colleagues JB, JV and JM worked extremely hard.  Their tackling, passing and shooting throughout the game demonstrated what a good bunch of midfielders the COLTS have.  But the visitors were resilient spurred on from an inspiring goalkeeper performance.  The visiting goalie was in great form; blocking, tipping or catching everything that the COLTS threw at him.  It was palpable how much extra confidence this gave Athletic as they started to create more and more chances.  As the game drew on and gaps appeared in midfield and as their confidence flowed, Athletic took their chances competently.  Two smart finishes to "reserve - back-up - substitute - stand-in" goalie JHs right made the difference.  It must be said that these first COLTS defeats did not dampen their enthusiasm.  Some excellent passing during the second half saw the COLTS again go close, and again rebuffed by super goalkeeping.  One such COLTS move was inspired by some magical skill in midfield by ThD who after dispossessing a Sittingbourne forward, performed a drag-back and found KT in the centre.  His pass wide to ToD on the right was inch perfect.  The resultant cross was just too much for JB to get on the end of.  It was one of the few times the Sittingbourne 'keeper was beaten!

In summary, an excellent effort by the COLTS who created many chances.  But on the day, this second sunny October Saturday in a row, it wasn't to be.  The points well deserved to Sittingbourne who now find themsleves two points clear as the division's front-runners.

Match report: 15th October 2011 - Lenham Wanderers FC U9 vs Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

Match 1: Lenham Wanderers FC U9 0-3 Borough Green FC U9 COLTS

History was made today for the COLTS, more about this later.  The game took place in the delightful Lenham village at the Lenham school.  The conditions were dry, sunny and on a pitch that took a stud, totally in keeping with traditional mid-October football weather.  The COLTS started briskly creating chances early in the game.  Both defending and midfield kept pace with the game offering Lenham little in the way of chances.  The COLTS maintained pressure forcing a number of corners.  But it was from open play that saw good team pressure from the COLTS force a loose ball which KT collected mid way in the Lenham half.  Side-stepping one defender and driving into the box, KT made space for himself before letting go a fierce drive into the top-left corner.  The keeper had no chance, one-nil to the COLTS!  Going a goal down sparked Lenham into action.  Having more of the ball they gained confidence and attacked down the COLTS right giving their forward a 'one on one' chance with COLTS keeper NC.  Showing remarkable bravery the COLTS man came off the better.  A short period where both teams cancelled eachother out followed.  Robust
